CIVITANOVA MARCHE - MACERATA

Civitanova Marche is a city of the Macerata Province with more then 40,000 inhabitants.

The Center of Italy is in itself a point of equilibrium between North and South, the moment in which all cultures meet. The region Marche shows this characteristic even more strongly and the city of Civitanova Marche is probably the kingpin of it.

It is not a classic sea city, this city doesn't empty in September when the sun leaves space to the rain. In this city life continues incessantly all through the year.

The first known human settlements in this area go back to the Paleolitic period. In the VI century the Greeks, who havily used the Adriatic sea for their commerce, used the mouth of Chienti river for their landfall.

On 268 b.C. when the Picenes have been defeated by the Romans, the city, that was called Cluana at that time, became Roman territory.

On 50 a.C. what is now known as Civitanova Alta , one of the districts of Civitanova Marche, was a village known as Cluentis Vicus.

With the invasion by the Visigoths, the city on the coast was destroyed and the few survivors escaped in the Cluentis Vicus, on the hill.

In the second century a. C., the inhabitants started to come closer to the coast, on the hill of San Marone, where, since the second century, there are memories of the saint martyr.

In the following centuries there has been an alternation of different rules, from the Varano from Camerino, to the Malatesta from Rimini, Francesco Sforza from Milano, the Viscontis and finally the family Cesarini from Rome.

On 1440 under the family Sforza, the walls of the city were built and the port was fortified and despite the attacks by pirates, the settlement of fishers and merchants on the coast continued.

In the XVI century the city was hit by the plague which made a massacre of its inhabitants.

Pope Sisto V,  at the end of 1500 transformed the Marquisate of the family in a Noble Dukedom and here the city benefited of a period of renaissance and urban renewal.

After a series of event, in 1938, the city hall of Porto Civitanova and the one of  Civitanova Alta were united in one only city hall.

On 1507 Annibal Caro, who has translated the Aeneid by Virgilio, was born in Civitanova Marche.

In 1888, at the age of 12, Sibilla Aleramo moved with her family to Civitanova. The writer became famous with her autobiographical book, A Woman. The book is mostly set at Civitanova Marche.

Civitanova Marche today is a very active and productive city.

It has two promenades, the South and North one, both fully equipped with bathing establishments, restaurants and animation. Both the promenades have a cycle path. The sea of Civitanova Marche was several times awarded with the prestigious Blue Flag.

A third cycle path extends from the Port up to Civitanova Alta in a wonderful scenario in the middle of the country side.

There is also the Compagnia di Arcieri di Civitanova Marche (Archers association) since 1983, one of the oldest one in the region Marche.
